Put simply, CLV is a measure of the future worth of a customer to the firm. As a result, CLV enables firms to treat individual customers differentially, and exclusively from each other based on their contributions to the company. Formally, CLV can be defined as follows:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-db1470b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"db1470b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>\u201cThe sum of cumulated cash flows \u2013 discounted using the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) \u2013 of a customer over his or her entire lifetime with the company.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4b4e927 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4b4e927\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The CLV metric can be calculated at an individual or an aggregate level and as a result, provide\u00a0managers with valuable information about the evolution of a client\u2019s Lifetime Value (LTV) over time. In its general form, CLV can be expressed as (<strong>Kumar, V.<\/strong>, and Werner Reinartz (2016), \u201cCreating Enduring Customer Value,\u201d\u00a0<em>Journal of Marketing<\/em>, Vol. 80 (Nov.), 36-68.):<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b088544 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b088544\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">CLV Measurement Approach<\/h4>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ccfa34c elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"ccfa34c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"728\" height=\"281\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vkclv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/CLV-Measurement-Approach.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vkclv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/CLV-Measurement-Approach.png 728w, http:\/\/www.vkclv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/CLV-Measurement-Approach-300x116.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c2182d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0c2182d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It is important to note that CLV is measured by predicting the purchase pattern (frequency of purchases) over a\u00a0<em>reasonable<\/em>\u00a0time period. The determination of the time period is critical, as it varies across industries. Although a \u201ctrue\u201d CLV measure implies measuring the customer\u2019s value over his or her lifetime, for most applications it is three years. The reason for the time period being three years is due to following reasons:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eaf304b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eaf304b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>(1) Since future cash flows are heavily discounted, a significant portion of profit can be accounted for in the first three years. Further, the contribution in the following years are very small.<\/p><p>(2) The predictive accuracy of the models declines over a longer timeframe.<\/p><p>(3) Changes in customer needs and life cycle are likely to change significantly beyond a 3-year window.<\/p><p>(4) Product offerings change in response to technological advancements and customer needs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4abd435 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4abd435\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>CLV predictions are updated based on a rolling-time horizon to accommodate changes in other environmental factors. However, specific industry trends do lead to some exceptions for this 3-year window. For instance, automakers can expect the customers to make a purchase every 4 to 6 years. In such a case, a longer time window is recommended to accommodate at least a couple of purchases or use purchase intention measures to forecast future value. Similarly, computer manufacturers can expect customers to make a purchase every 1 to 2 years. In this case, a 4 to 5-year window is recommended to account for at least 2-3 purchases.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-c71276c\" data-id=\"c71276c\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap
